What are some social networking sites similar to LinkedIn? My uncle has to get a new job, and it was recommended that he join some social networking sites such as LinkedIn to gain connections and speak to others in his profession. I was asked to gather a list of these sites for him, but the only thing I can think of is LinkedIn. I know there are ones like Facebook and MySpace, but I mean more professional-geared sites. Any suggestions?

Anthony S replied: "I have been using the direct matches site to meet people who are in the same business that I am - you might find it helpful- the link is in sources below"

Can your connections in LinkedIn be viewed by anonymous persons? I would prefer that connections in linkedIn (a social network) are NOT viewable UNLESS they join my network. I don’t want to inadvertently give out information of friends, colleagues and associates to anonymous persons.

M W replied: "Yes. I have run across people's information by accident upon multiple occasions. And I was not even in Linked in, I was Google'ing. I believe they have a neat idea. But there is no way that they could protect that information. None. Kudos to you for asking that."

fjpoblam replied: "I just tried and, no, I can't view anyone's connections directly on the website. But I would trust K W above, as I am a paranoid."

micfo.com replied: "I remember there is an option there to make visible the connection or not, if you make it no, it will be not visible to others those you're not connected."

ccSteve replied: "David, By default, if you connect to {A, B, C, & D}, each of them can see that you connect to the others. Everyone else on the system sees that you connect to 4 people but can not see who the connections are. If you'd like, you can turn off the "see my connections" so that your direct connections no longer can see who you connect to (under account settings). steve"

LinkedIn: how can I grow my network connection without getting banned? I have invited a few people in the past to connect with me, however I got a couple of "I don't know this person" answers, which restricted my profile on LinkedIn. I was just wondering how can I connect to people without my account being suspended....I cannot send In mails, unfortunately. I would appreciate your help.

..NiSH../~\ replied: "i don't think it is possible,"

Ivan replied: "LinkedIn should be used for genuine personal network building. I immediately block anyone I don't know who tries to link to me. I devalues my status if random people connect as I deliberately select people I trust with a good cross section of skills and backgrounds. Use introductions from people you do know and who trust you and then when your function is restored use In-Mail messages to people you don't to see if they are receptive to you rather than trying to link straight off."

Is it smart for a small business to invite its customers to be contacts on its LinkedIn site? I recently accepted an invitation to become a contact to someone else's LinkedIn site and immediately got excited about using it for my own business. I sent an invitation to my customer list to become contacts and almost 50 signed up. Now I'm worried that a potential competitor could use my "customer list" to start a competing business. I've got some pretty impressive looking contacts and don't want to jeopardize my business. Should I take it down or continue to invite others to become contacts?

Sam replied: "Linkedln is a very good networking tool! Also this one quite helpful for small business. The Young Entrepreneur Society"

Is it inappropriate to add my previous bosses as contacts on Linkedin? I just joined Linkedin, and would like to add 3 of my previous bosses as contacts. 2 of them were my bosses during internships, and another was my boss during an actual job. Is it inappropriate to request them to be contacts? Who am I supposed to add as contacts?

ccSteve replied: "Connect to people you a) know, and b) trust. The rest will follow. If you trust your former bosses, why wouldn't you want to connect with them? Read more on this site: steve"

Testers replied: "There are two ways to approach LinkedIn, open or trusted network. Always start with a trusted network, add those who you know personally and would trust recommending to others. Hopefully your ex-bosses already belong to LinkedIn and are trustworthy. Add classmates, co-workers, and others that you would like to connect with. After a while, you will need to decide if you want to be a open network, and basically connect with anyone who wants to connect with you. Personally, I have only one open networker in my network, but I know and trust him personally. If you really want to get the most out of LinkedIn, I would attend a LinkedIn webinar. I have attended the Integrated Alliances classes in person, and as a student (I have no financial relationship with them other than giving them my money) I highly recommend at least one class."

Colleen St. Claire replied: "I think it is appropriate to add the former bosses as contacts. I think the aim of Linkedin is to develop networks that will help you in your career. You will be a valuable contact for your former bosses as well, as long as you did a good job there. Perhaps friends of theirs might be looking for someone with your degree and skills who is a proven hard worker. Having you in their contacts will make them look good to their own contacts if they can recommend you. Everyone wins! Other than former bosses, you can also add former coworkers, fellow students and teachers from your school and friends in similar industries to yours. I think the biggest rule is to only add people who you know personally. Once you are working in your career, you can add people you meet with whom you exchange business cards."

Has anyone found new business on linkedin? I am constantly getting invitations to join linkedin. I assume that it takes some time to set it up. Is this a good way to find new clients? Or reconnect with old clients?

Sri replied: "Absolutely!!! Linked in a a great tool for white collar professionals to network purely on a professional basis; given that it is very oriented (in its features) to professional networking, it keeps out all and sundry. It allows you to post your information in a resume format thereby allowing placement firms and recruiters search for people like you. You also end up keeping in touch with people you meet infrequently and fosters re-connecting. Your email address is kept confdential so you don't get spammed needlessly. I've had a number of people interested in my professional experience contact me thru Linked in."

How do I find who is searching for me on Linkedin? How do I find who is searching for me on Linkedin? Yesterday it was on my home page - a list of people who searched me, number of times I've been searched. The list is no longer on my page? How can I find this? Thanks, Claire

AnYingJie replied: "the actual list of who searched you is visible if you have one of the paid for options.. Otherwise, they just tease you with 'xxx people looked at your profile recently' On your default home page. on the right hand side, near the bottom (after the featured application), there should be an expandable line "Who's viewed my profile" and it can be expanded= I am not aware that it can be readily disabled.. but maybe checkout the Settings page"

Would it be appropriate to add someone to your LinkedIn network that you don't know well? I've found a few people on LinkedIn that I know from a place where I've just started volunteering. Would it be appropriate to add them to my network now, or wait a couple months? Also, I need suggestions for other professional networking sites like LinkedIn. Thanks.

Ron N replied: "I think it would be fine to add them. People are on linkenIn to network and that is what you are doing. If they didn't want to network they probably wouldn't be on the site. As always be carefully on who you invite in because they have access to your contacts also. is an networking site. But I have like LinkedIn better."
