Best free software for computer tune up? What is the best free software that you can use to tune your computer or just make it faster?

mister360 replied: "I personally use CCleaner...http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ CCleaner (formerly Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. The best part is that it's fast! (normally taking less than a second to run) and Free. Good Luck!"

Demo replied: "There is no single one."

Addicted to Diet Coke replied: "I like the webiste you can create a free account or you can scan your computer anonymously. I personally would create an account because it saves your pc info so you can refer back to it later."

rgs821 replied: "Don't download anything from the INTERNET it is all crap and does not do nothing. Some of the stuff as spy ware on it.Buy something at a store on a cd from a name you have herd of.Even that stuff is overpriced but that is all you can do.And when you see something that says free scan download free don't do it.The run a scan and say you have a lot of problems that you don't have just to get you to buy"

Is a computer tune-up the same as defragment? I am using the tune-up option on my Windows LiveCare, but I am wondering if I should also use the defragment option under the C drive properties window. Is it necessary to do both?, and will it hurt if I do both because Im probably going to do both unless I find out its potentially bad. Also you can give me tips to make my computer run faster, or to delete useless files that would be cool. If their are any free software to that will help my computer run faster, or delete unnecessary files let me know please. Thanks.

BillM replied: "yeah, you will love this. i do . advance system care, and it is free.."

wiztek replied: "Your Windows program kinda sucks but defrag is part of the tune-up."

dustydude replied: "Defragmenting is always good. When you write on your hard disk, windows chucks it anywhere it can, and when you want to find those files it has to go through your drive, and get all the fragments of data together to, execute a task... defragmenting is where it gatheres all the "fragments" from around your hard drive, and organises them so that it is all together, and windows can find it quickly. This will speed up overall performance of your PC Defragment: RECOMMENDED. hope this helps"

Ling4 replied: "Defrag is not the same as tune -up. When you do a tune up your computer will delete temporary files, clear some history in things about the internet, maybe uninstall programs you do not use among other a-little-more-advanced processes. When you do a defrag the computer takes together all the pieces of the files that are scattered all over the hard drive. You know, every time you open a file it the computer may save a little piece of the file in different places, that is why when you do not do a defrag in a long time it takes longer for the computer to open files and programs. I would recommend you to do both, tune-up and defrag like once or tiwce a month. There is a very good program called CCleaner (google it to find it). It cleans the registry from things that had happen in the computer that may be useless. Also you can try uninstalling programs you do not use any more Hope this helps"

klapperichchris replied: "I have no experience with Live Care, but have had little luck with programs claiming to speed up your PC. Here's a quick guide. 1. Delete ALL the stuff you no longer need or use. Then uninstall everything you don't need or use, or have never even heard of. 2. Do a scan of drive with your security software suite. 2. Run the XP disc cleanup tool. Now defragment your hard drive again. Now run a registry cleaner or something similar 3. Run msconfig and go the the startup tab. Disable any applications which don't *need* to be running constantly. Most programs really don't need to start with the computer, and so disabling them can greatly reduce boot up time. If you need them, you can still start them from the desktop. 4. If you're using Vista, consider using Vista ReadyBoost. This allows you to increase your computers speed with a flash drive or other non-volatile flash memory. If you have 2 gigs of RAM or less, this can noticeably increase Vistas performance. In my experience, any program claiming to speed up your computer should be avoided. Most of them add themselves to the list of startup programs I mentioned earlier. Apologies in advance for the huge rant. EDIT: Running both defragmenting programs probably won't hurt anything, just take extra time and put extra wear and tear on your drive. But the windows one is notoriously slow."

How do I back up my entire computer completely and safely? I want to install a Windows update but I want to back up my Entire computer to make sure I can reverse any adverse effects of the update. I have System Mechanic and it is like a computer tune up software. It includes an emergency rescue cd just in case something horrible happens to it. However, I have never used this so I can't trust it yet. How can I back up my entire computer then? I am sure there is a Windows application that allow me to do this but I just do not know where it is. If anybody knows that will be greatly appreciated. In addition, if you know of any other free and legitimate way to back up the computer then please be sure to include that too. Thank you!

Fady replied: "first download a backup software, anyone google it, then buy a portable hard disk, and connect it, then use the backup software and thats it"

Josh replied: "I suggest buying an external hard drive (the amount of things you have on ur computer / the space u have used up should help tell u how big of one to buy) plug it into ur computer go to control panel, System and Maintenance, Back up and Restore Center, Back up now, then tell it to back up all ur files to ur new hard drive. Then you can update ur computer and still have everything from before."

BillM replied: "It might be easier to just turn off the system restore, then you last restore point before you do the update will be the restore point, Or you could make bootable cd, and put the os on a read write cd. go here to see how to make your bootable cd "

Muf D replied: "cant see what your worried about, just download the updates, you will be safe, they not harm your comp"

It used to play the music both as it is written and when the tune is finished by clicking on a button. This has now stopped working - does anyone know why please? I have checked that my computer audio is OK by playing other stuff such as radio or CD

PUNTER replied: "uninstall it &&reload it,sometimes drivers get mixed around."
